SAICE meets TWO Parliamentary Portfolio Committees in TWO weeks!

 

Dear SAICE members

 

Our own SAICE Member of Parliament, Lemias Mashile, was instrumental in
arranging an opportunity for SAICE pioneer Allyson Lawless to meet the
Local Government Portfolio Committee the week before last. The obvious
choice for discussion was Skills, and Numbers and Needs. We are happy to
report that feedback from the Committee was complimentary and positive.

 

Following the above successful meeting, public hearings on a policy
concerning water quality were held in Parliament on Wednesday 4 June
2008. SAICE's Water Engineering Division only became aware of these
hearings via an advertisement received at the eleventh hour. While the
Institution was hastily arranging for Dr Kevin Wall to fly the SAICE
flag at the hearings, both Lemias Mashile and the chair of the Water
Affairs & Forestry Parliamentary Portfolio Committee called to make sure
that SAICE would indeed be attending. It is heartening to know that
SAICE's role is being recognised at this level. Dr Wall reported that
the hearings had focused on skills, management and funding.

 

SAICE members might not always be aware of the extent to which the
Institution makes use of opportunities such as these to help shape the
future of our profession and our country. We would therefore like to
thank our visionaries and late night oil burners for their patience,
perseverance, courage and faith. SAICE is indeed bridging one gap after
the other, on behalf of its members!
