ONE DAY SEMINAR
ON THE DESIGN OF CONCRETE OUTFALL SEWERS
Date: 20th May 2009 Venue:
Herms Conference
Centre, 42 Newton Street
Time: 08h30 to 16h30
Port Elizabeth
The disposal of wastewater is a critical component in ensuring the
primary health of our population.
The combined effect of various factors on the long-term performance of
outfall sewers is frequently omitted when sewers are being designed and
as a result they do not always provide the service life expected.
Concrete is the ideal material for large diameter outfall sewers, but
under certain conditions this material is subject to corrosion due to
the biogenic formation of sulphuric acid. By considering the factors
contributing towards this during the design and specification of sewers
this problem can be minimized or eliminated.
The seminar will cover the correct procedures for determining the
hydraulic, structural and durability requirements of sewers subject to
various site and operating conditions to ensure that they will provide a
long trouble free service life. The seminar will focus on the prediction
of corrosion in concrete sewers and how this can be eliminated or
controlled by taking the necessary measures in the detailing and pipe
material choice.
The speaker will be Alaster Goyns who is a Pr Eng with a Bsc Civil Eng &
an MBL. He spent 21 years in the concrete pipe industry and for the past
10 years has run his own consulting business that specialises in gravity
pipelines and trenchless rehabilitation.
He manages the Virginia Sewer corrosion project on behalf of the
concrete pipe industry (1999-present) and was a member of sewer study
group initiated in 1987. On this project a series of pipe materials are
being evaluated under extremely aggressive conditions. The results have
been used in a design manual for the prediction and control of corrosion
in sewers. He has written several papers on the subject of sewer
corrosion and has presented them both locally and internationally.
Copies of the design manual will be provided at the seminar.
There is no charge for this seminar - Drinks and snacks will be served
This seminar will qualify for CPD points
