Water Engineering Courses 2010
Course 1: Flood Hydrology and Urban Runoff Modelling (8 - 10 February
2010)
Course 2: Pipeline Optimisation and Design (15 - 19 February 2010)
Course 3: Modelling of Free Surface Flow and Dam Break Analysis (11 - 13
August 2010)
Course 1: Flood Hydrology and Urban Runoff Modelling
A practical course on flood calculation methods and flood routing will
be presented. The application of the theory will be reviewed. Working
through practical exercises will reinforce the application of the theory
in practice. Flood calculations methods such as deterministic, empirical
and statistical analysis will be applied in the exercises. The popular
freeware software program, EPASWMM will be demonstrated and introduced
as a tool for the modeling of urban drainage system. The EPA Storm Water
Management Model is a dynamic rainfall-runoff simulation model used for
single event or long-term (continuous) simulation of runoff quantity and
quality from primarily urban areas. After this course, you will be in a
position to calculate the design flood and perform a routing simulation
of a storm water system.
Who should attend?
Persons in the planning and design of flood and storm water related
systems would benefit from this course.
Course 2: Pipeline Optimisation and Design
The focus in this course will be on the practical aspects of pipeline
design. The theory of pipeline engineering will be reviewed and the
process of optimizing and designing of a pipeline will be demonstrated
by working through an example project. The effect of energy escalation
will be reviewed against normative design selection criteria.
Participants will leave with the confidence to design pipe systems.
Pipeline hydraulics, surge analysis, pipeline component design, pipeline
installation, life cycle costing, testing and operation will be covered
in this course. On Friday, 19 February 2010, an optional day is
scheduled where a pipe installation site as well as pipe and valve
manufacturers will be visited for a first hand look at the latest
manufacturing processes and products.
Who should attend?
Planners, designers and managers of pipelines and water infrastructure,
will benefit from the course.
Course 3: Modelling of Free Surface Flow and Dam Break Analysis
The course will focus on the basic theory and practical applications of
free surface flow. Aspects that will be covered range from the basic
theory of flood calculations, free surface flow, mass, energy and
momentum conservation as well as the use of the popular software package
HEC-RAS.
Who should attend?
Persons in the planning and design of flood and storm water related
structures would benefit from this course.
