To all SAICE members - New Year's greetings from National Office!

SAICE National Office staff news

Times and circumstances change and at SAICE National Office some fairly
radical changes are taking place at the moment. Our members are
encouraged to get to know the new names and faces and to be patient
during the change-over, since existing as well as new staff members will
take time to get up to speed with the new situation. The changes will
take time to implement, although some have already happened.

Members are also referred to the notice that accompanied the 2009
membership subscription invoices. In that notice the 2008 Finance and
Administration Committee chair, Peter Kleynhans, explained the rationale
behind the changes.

Herewith a breakdown of the current situation:

Chief Executive Officer

This is a new post that will replace the current position of Executive
Director. After 18 years in the hot seat, the Executive Board approved a
structure in terms of which the current incumbent, Dawie Botha, was to
be released from his duties as Executive Director, but retain the SAICE
Outreach Programmes as well as the International Affairs Portfolio for
the next few years. He will also assist with the orientation of the new
CEO as soon as that position has been filled. In this scenario Dawie
will be utilized by SAICE for roughly 60% of every month. Dawie will
pursue some new ventures in his new "private" capacity. The process to
identify the CEO has started and it is envisage that an appointment
could be finalized during the first half of 2009.

               Manager: Executive Office

For a long time there has been a need to support the Executive Director
at a senior level in terms of outreach and communication - including
strategies and preparation of media reports, presentations, research,
special projects, strategic issues and so forth. With the imminent
appointment of a CEO, this issue has become even more important, since
SAICE has progressed far and beyond the situation of 20 years ago. The
very visible SAICE public profile has resulted in the fact that it has
become quite a popular address for enquiries, of which some are rather
complicated and require more than routine answers. This incumbent will
also assist with tasks related to maintaining continuity and service in
the executive office when the CEO is occupied with other tasks or away.
This relates especially to enquiries from members as well as the public
and the industry at large, as well as the added benefit that this person
is able to stand in for the CEO when required.

Linda Erasmus, a former SAICE Public Relations Officer in the early
90's, has been appointed in this position. After leaving SAICE, Linda
remained connected with civil engineering related issues through working
for a firm of consultants, moving on to local government and later
working as a consultant in the field of marketing, public relations,
publications and advertising for professional firms. She has now
returned to SAICE with extensive experience and a thorough understanding
of the civil engineering profession.

              Editor's assistant

With the appointment of Verelene De Koker as the permanent in-house
Editor of the SAICE Magazine and Journal, the position that she vacated
had to be filled. Cathy van der Westhuizen has already been with SAICE
National Office in a temporary position for six months to assist the
Finance department, but soon had to assist with the overload from the
magazine and journal. Verelene and Cathy make a formidable team and
Cathy has now been appointed as full time and permanent assistant for
the Editor.

               Bookkeeper - Courses

The activities around SAICE Education and Training increased
substantially and required someone to look after the financial aspects.
After making use of temporary staff for more than a year, Helen
Johnstone has also now been appointed on a permanent basis to take care
of these aspects. So, even though she is not such a new face any longer,
Helen is welcomed as part of the permanent SAICE team.

Bookkeeper - SAICE Branches & Divisions

Due to changing circumstances in the Branches and the Divisions and the
heavy load that volunteers have to carry, as well as requirements of the
SAICE auditors, a number of units are now making use of the Executive
Board offer to use the services of the National Office for bookkeeping.
A position has been created to deal with these tasks, and it is
envisaged that the position will be successfully filled in the near
future.

              Financial trainee

As an additional contribution to the development of South Africa's young
people, a 2008 matriculant Rose Magugula has been engaged to be trained
in the Finance Department in general aspects of finance and bookkeeping.

Best wishes from SAICE to all its members for a prosperous and healthy
2009!

Eng David Botha PR Eng

SAICE Executive Director
