INTRODUCTION: South Africa has a major problem ridding stormwater of
litter. An integrated approach to the
solution of this problem is required requiring planning controls, source
controls and structural controls. This workshop
presents such an integrated approach drawing on some eight years of
continuous research conducted on behalf of the
Water Research Commission of South Africa (WRC) by the presenter. The
protocols developed by the presenter have
been adopted round the world including, inter alia, portions of the
United States of America, Canada, Australia and Malaysia.
This workshop is an attempt to help stormwater professionals
become competent in the solution of this dire problem.
Programme:
Developing a litter management strategy Part 1: "Prevention is better
than cure" (Planning & Source Controls)
* Trying to influence human behaviour (Presentation 3)
* Videos; "Litter Attack" (the message to municipal staff) and
"Hill 2 Ocean" (the message to the public)
* Sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) - focusing on source
control (and handing the litter management problem back to the cleansing
department!) (Presentation 4)
* Developing a litter management strategy Part 2: "Clearing up the
mess" (Structural Controls)
* Litter traps; the good, the bad (mostly!) and the ugly...
(Presentation 5)
* Trap selection procedure (Presentation 6)
THE PRESENTER: The course is presented by Prof Neil Armitage from the
University of Cape Town. Prof Armitage
s very active in research. He leads the inter-disciplinary Integrated
Urban Water Management group that includes
academics and students from the Departments of Civil Engineering,
Environmental and Geographical Sciences and
Social Anthropology at the University of Cape Town. Apart from being the
Project Leader for several contracts awarded
by the WRC, Prof Armitage is also a member of the Reference Groups of
numerous other WRC research projects.
He has been a member of the Scientific Committee for a number of
international conferences, is frequently asked to be
referee for scientific publications, and is often invited to be an
external examiner for post-graduate theses. He is currently
rated as a C1 researcher with the National Research Foundation (NRF).
Prof Neil Armitage is currently the only African

International Water Association (IAHR/IWA) Joint
Committee on Urban Drainage.
