Department of Civil Engineering
Water Courses 2011
Start Date: 2011-03-08
End Date: 2011-03-25
Course 1: Water Resources Analyses - 8 to 11 March 2011
Description
The course is divided into several session:
Firstly, the generating of a monthly stream flow record for a catchment (WRMS2008);
Secondly, an introduction to the use of the network based water resources model will be discussed.
Thirdly, a practical problem will be used to acquaint participants with features & use of software;
Lastly, a session will be allocated to the management of water resources.
On completion of the course participants will be able to:
- Generate a stream flow record
- Set up a yield model
- Analyse a system to determine the firm yield and the optimum operating rules
- Generate stochastic sequences and determine the reliability of the supply from the water resource.
Inputs will be provided by personnel from the Department of Water Affairs, WRP (Consulting Engineers) and SSI (Consulting Engineers).
Who should attend?
Persons in the planning, operation and management of surface water resources.
Course 2: Pump Station Design - 22 to 25 March 2011
Description
This course reviews the theory of pump selection, dimensioning of the components, pump station layout and sump design. Other concepts that are covered are the identification of valve requirements, review of superstructure, lighting, ventilation and the control of induced pressures during normal operation.
The effect of energy escalation and the life cycle costing will be evaluated against normative design selection criteria.
Furthermore, the installation of pumps and the construction of pump stations will be discussed. Typical practical problems will be discussed and delegates will be guided through the solution.
Participants will leave with the confidence to select appropriate pumps and design a pump station.
On Friday, 25 March 2011, two pump stations (and pump manufacturer) will be visited to reinforce the material covered during the course.
Inputs will be provided by personnel from Aurecon, Tricom, Eskom, DFC, KSB and Sulzer.
Who should attend?
Planners, designers and managers of pump stations and water infrastructure.
