Urban Water Management research group is an interdisciplinary research team
with a research office in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University
of Cape Town (UCT). It was recently awarded Water Research Commission of South
Africa (WRC) funding to conduct research into alternative technology for
stormwater management in line with the principles of Sustainable Urban Drainage
Systems (SUDS) for possible application in South African urban areas. The study
is being conducted in partnership with two firms of consulting engineers based
in <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Gauteng</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Province</st1:PlaceType>
as well as the Cities of Cape Town, eThekwini (<st1:City w:st="on">Durban</st1:City>),
<st1:City w:st="on">Johannesburg</st1:City> and Tshwane (<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">Pretoria</st1:City></st1:place>). Its multidisciplinary approach
involves environmental scientists and social anthropologists alongside civil
engineers because some of the anticipated key stumbling blocks to SUDS
implementation in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">South
Africa</st1:country-region></st1:place> are environmental and
social/institutional. The completion date of the study is 31 March 2012.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:6.0pt;text-align:justify;text-indent:
36.0pt;line-height:15.0pt'><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span
style='font-size:12.0pt'>We are now seeking a potential full-time PhD candidate
to be the lead researcher in the project. This would entail ongoing interaction
with all of the partner organisations and, in time, graduate students in the
Departments of Environmental Science and Social Anthropology. The research
period would be for the duration of the project (approximately three and a half
years). MSc(Eng) candidates may also be considered, in which case the notional
time period would be eighteen months but with the possibility that this could
be extended to the end of the project if the candidate is able to upgrade to
PhD. Both full thesis and part coursework / part thesis MSc(Eng) options are
available. Commencement is as soon as possible after registration upon
acceptance (probably September). The successful candidate will receive a
bursary that is sufficient to cover academic fees at UCT and basic living
expenses. Applicants must possess good passes at the appropriate level in Civil
Engineering or a related field from a suitable tertiary institution. They must
be able to demonstrate excellent command of the English language, both spoken
and written, and have a valid driver’s licence. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
