engineering, technology and innovation
There are so many worthy professionals who deserve to be honoured for
their research/life's work and contributions made in the civil
engineering and scientific fields.
Should you be able to identify such a person, please nominate him/her or
inform me of such a person and I will assist with the nomination.

Submit nominations for the prestigious 2008/09 NSTF Awards
for outstanding contributions to science, engineering, technology and
innovation!
The future is now!
Nominate your candidate in one of the following categories:
A. Individual over a lifetime
B. Individual through research and its outputs (over last 5 years or
less)
C. Individual through activities other than research and its outputs
(over last 5 years or less)
D. Research for innovation by a team or individual in a Corporate
organisation
E. Research for innovation by a team or individual in a Small Medium and
Micro Enterprise (SMME) organisation
F. Research for innovation by a team or individual in a Not-for-Profit
(NPO)/Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) or Community Based
Organisation (CBO)
G. Research capacity developers - Two awards are made - Male and Female
H. Senior black researcher (over last 5 to 10 years) Two awards are made
- Male and Female
J. Distinguished young black researcher (over the last 2 to 5 years) Two
awards are made - Male and Female
K. Science communication for public awareness
What's in it for you?
* The nominators of all finalists and winners will be recognised in the
annual 'Who's Who in Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation'
publication.
What's in it for the finalists and winners?
All finalists will:
* Feature in the annual 'Who's Who in Science, Engineering, Technology
and Innovation' publication;
* Receive certificates; and * Have the opportunity to participate in
Science Communication workshops.
Winners will be announced at the esteemed Gala Awards Dinner in May 2009
and will:
* Receive the sought-after NSTF Awards Trophy;
* Have the opportunity to present their work to academic and community
audiences;
* Receive coverage in a dedicated media supplement; and
* Winners of Categories G, H and J will receive research grants.
Submissions are called in two stages
Stage 1: Notice of intent to nominate
* Register your 'Notice of intent to nominate' your candidate on
www.nstfawards.org.za where the nomination form can be found. Submit it
online by 12 November 2008.
* We will acknowledge receipt and supply you with the full nomination
form by e-mail.
Stage 2: Nomination form and documentation
* Complete the nomination form and prepare the supporting documentation
in line with the evaluation criteria overleaf.
* Submit the form and documentation to the NSTF no later than 6 February
2009.
* This deadline is fixed and cannot be extended.
Evaluation Criteria
Primary criteria
Contributions to the advancement of science, technological innovation
and/or new knowledge generated are evaluated using the following
criteria:
* Contribution inputs, research process and outputs;
* Practical application/implementation;
* Commercial or economic impact;
* Relevance to South Africa and its people and resultant contribution to
SET policy;
* Promotion of public awareness of science and technology;
* Promotion of education in this field as a contribution to the public
awareness of SET;
* Social and economic sustainability; and
* National and international recognition.
Category G - additional criteria
In assessing nominations in category G the following factors are
considered together with the primary criteria:
* The number of black South African postgraduate students trained who
completed their studies;
* Assistance provided to students to present and publish research work;
* Provision of mentorship, support and the development of essential
skills in the world of business and work, and
* Continued interest shown in the individuals' professional advancement.
Category K - additional criteria
In assessing nominations in category K the following factors are
considered together with the primary criteria:
* The quality of communication products;
* The diverse methods and quality of delivery of messages; and
* The reach of the communication to diverse audiences.
